Drastic changes to UK Lotto in October - Frank - 06-18-2015 05:15 AM

UK lottery operator Camelot have just announced that the current 6/49 format will come to an end in October. Their proposal is that the format will be 6/59 drastically worsening the odds of winning a jackpot to about one in 45 million.

Despite it also being harder to win a consolation prize for matching three, four or five balls, the prize money for these levels will stay the same. The only consolation would be that if a player matches 2 balls they win a free ticket for another draw.
By this tactic they claim that the overall odds of winning a prize actually goes down from one in 54 to one in 9.3.
Reaction on social media is furious, and I am furious too. In one fell swoop they have rendered my 25 year old website obsolete. It is designed only to work with the 6/49 matrix and would need major spreadsheet redesign to make it work with 6/59. I just don't have the time and enthusiasm for this format. Sad but true.

Camelot new prize structure is here... Scroll down to see it.

https://www.national-lottery.co.uk/lotto-changes#New-prize-structure

Their overall chance of winning a prize takes into account that the odds of matching 2 balls and getting a free lucky dip ( classed as a prize) are 1 in 9.3.

If you want to know what the overall odds of actually winning money are, look towards the one in 97 for matching three balls. Taking into account the other money prizes reduces this slightly, about one in 90 as a rough guess.Cry so for every £180 you spend on tickets you could win money., most likely to be £25. Curse

terrible news, Frank, I'm sorry!
6/59 ? the chances have decreased very much! only a little wins can give us the energy to continue this hard work! I imagine that system where my investment X was cover in time with repeatedly wins, tottaled X!

that is a very interesting scope, a resoving of costs problem! don't you think?

the ultimate my efforts have been directed to 49s lottery, online; why you don't try there?

in addition, in offline lotteries, in your country, exists many attractions!
for example Slovenia lotery 20/62!
Have you offline lotteries in agencies where people prevailing bet on football?

Hi Mario, thanks for your reply. Yes the bookmakers do 21's here in the UK, but I don't think you can win a multi million pound prize at the bookmakers. I'm looking to win life changing money for acceptable odds and reasonably priced tickets. Camelot will stop doing that very soon. The only way to reduce the odds is to buy more tickets, so to keep costs down one must wait, save ones money for multiple rollover draws ( and there will be lots of those) and buy multiple tickets in the chosen draw. The new format is still better odds than Euromillions, and I only play that game when the jackpot is more than £50 million ! Looks like I will play the new UK Lotto about once a month. Nerd

Well with only about 8 more games for the Lotto in its current form, I laughed when I stumbled on this article ...

Just shows its not about customers, its about profits and good causes.

Well tonight will be the very last UK 6/49 Lotto, so its a sad day for lovers of the existing format. Saturday will be the UK's first 6/59 lotto.

Precise details of the changes with honest apraisals of them have been done by R.K Lloyd on his merseyworld lotto site. Details are in this link:-

Frank,

thanks for the work you did with your home page about the UK 6/49 lotto for us.

In Germany we still have the 6/49 lotto, but the bonus ball changed
into a super ball 0...9, separately drawn.

And the draws can only on the web be watched on http://www.lotto.de

The 6/59 formula certainly will not be profitable for the company,
if the people realise, that they will get less money back than before.

The most fair game is betting on a single lotto number in my opinion,
e.g. betting for a 6/49 draw or less. But that's illegal in Germany.

Hi 649lotto player, thanks for your reply. Well it looks like the British public haven't been fooled by the spin. According to calculations on the Merseyworld site Saturday ticket sales fell by 27.9% on the first draw of the new format. Camelot are also tyrying to pull the wool over our eyes about how much money was paid out in prize money for that draw. They say it was £38.2 million when in fact it was £29.9 million. They conveniently forgot that approx £5.3 million wasn't won (jackpot rolled over) and £3.0 million was allowed for free lucky dips which are a zero cash prize to the public.

I 'won' a free lucky dip which gives me a less than 2% chance of winning some money next time. Yippee!

I'm surprised that RK Lloyds Merseygull world site haven't reset their statistics now that the lottery has changed. I regard it as a complete reset to zero for everything and brand new statistics. He is just carrying on with the original draw number sequence, ten new balls added, so his frequencies are lop sided, with the frequency for ball number 2 , drawn on Saturday being 242, whilst frequencies in the 50 to 59 range are zero apart from numbers 52 and 53, which were drawn on Saturday. Other statistics like pairs etc will be equally skewed.
I'm still going to be doing my own analysis from scratch on the 659 lotto, I just won't be publishing to the web on a regular basis.

The change to your German lotto would presumably make the 5 plus bonus ( super) ball odds about four times easier than before. Ours is now 3.22 times harder. Icon_rolleyes

RE: Drastic changes to UK Lotto in October - Frank - 12-05-2015 05:03 AM

One dramatic consequence of the new lotto prize structure is the very poor payout for getting match 5 plus the bonus ball. Prior to the change, a typical payout was £90,000 at odds of 2.3 million to 1. Now the odds are 7.7 million to one and you get, £17,000 ! That's what it was on Wednesday for a quad rollover! On Saturday it's a quint rollover, the first ever, but that doesn't improve your chance of winning more than £25. Icon_frown
